Deep in the heart of rural France, at the edge of the tiny hamlet called Theix (pronounced tay-iks) we found this holiday home in 2003. It was the wonderful views in every direction that captured our hearts, looking out over fields and woods across a valley. It's name 'Le Pâtural' means the pasture.

We made some renovations, adding a light-filled living room, a new kitchen and bathrooms and a private terrace in the garden. In fact we lived in the gîte for 21 months while our new house was being built in the half-acre field alongside, and we found it comfortable and spacious. Now it's available for renting, for long weekends, holidays or as a base for house-hunting for your own patch of paradise.

Accommodation

The gîte accomodates up to four people. It's all on one level, so there are no stairs. There are two bedrooms; one with a supremely comfortable kingsize bed, a wardrobe and chest of drawers, the other smaller bedroom with twin singles and a hanging wardrobe.  There is a fully tiled shower room with WC and washbasin accessed from the large bedroom, and a separate washroom with WC, washbasin and automatic washing machine, drying rack, ironing board and iron. The kitchen is fitted with a big refrigerator, electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave oven and dishwasher, kettle, toaster and everything you need for self-catering.
In the living room there's a huge sofa, a TV receiving British free-to-air channels, a DVD player and a selection of DVD's to borrow and various books, games and cards. There's one set of table & chairs inside, and another out through the double French doors on the terrace, for dining 'al fresco' under the dappled shade of the silver birch. For hot weather there are electric fans, and for cooler times, portable electric heaters. Free Wi-Fi Internet connection is available.  This property is not suitable for children under 12 years.

Outdoor Living

The garden around the gîte has its own gateway from the lane, and a gravelled driveway provides off-road parking. Among the trees, you'll find a hammock and a canvas hanging-chair for swinging in the shade and admiring the view. There's a barbeque next to the terrace for fresh-air fry-ups. A bench provides the perfect place to sip your glass of wine and watch the sun go down.

Then there's the swimming pool with another terrace and fabulous views. This is shared with us, the owners, and is accessed through a lockable gate. The pool is 10 metres by 5 metres, with Roman steps for easy access, and is 1.1 metres deep throughout. Great for swimming and for pool games, but not for diving! The solar heating system warms the water up to 32 degrees in summer and extends the period of use from April to October. There's also a poolside solar-heated shower for rinsing off. Four sunloungers are provided, along with various inflatables and pool toys. For safety and to meet with regulations, there's a pool alarm fitted.  There's even an underwater pool light if you fancy a dip in the dark.

Things to do

As a change from relaxing by the pool, you might want to explore the quiet lanes on foot or on two wheels following the circular routes we provide.   There's canoeing on the river, water-skiing at Lake St. Pardoux, horse-riding at Lathus, all can be arranged for you.  Or if you've ever wanted to record your own CD of music, singing or poetry, you can do that here in our own recording studio.  There are also theme parks and zoos within an hour's drive, details of which are provided in the gite.
